Green lagoon or Lago Verde

Bright green lake along rugged coastline near El Golfo

Located just outside El Golfo is this beach. Above the high water line is a permanent lagoon that algae have coloured a vivid bright green. Set amongst the black sand beach and lava cliffs makes this a worth while site to see.

The lagoon was formed by a volcano that had the seaward half eroded by the sea. The volcanic eruption that formed the volcano took place in the 1730’s. The lagoon remains full due to the porous rock formations below the surface allowing the sea water to enter.

To get to the lagoon drive towards the beach side village of El Golfo. A few hundred meters before entering the village you start to go down hill, on the left is the car park for the lagoon. Park here then take the cliff side path for around 150 meters to the green lake view point. Along the path you will see the local fishing boats moored on the beach.

The green lagoon is also known as ‘Lago Verde’ and ‘Charco del los Clicos’. The name ‘Charco del los Clicos’ came from a shell fish that were in abundance in this area.

The area has a rugged and dramatic beauty not only from the green lake but also the remaining half of the volcanoes rock strata.

Amongst the black sands can be found a semi precious crystal called ‘Olivine’. This is a semi transparent green crystal that jewellery can be made.

To finish your day go to the nearby town of El Golfo and find a great sea front restaurant. Order some fish and tapas with local white wine and watch the sunset.

Whilst visiting the Green Lagoon just a 5 minute drive away you can visit the crashing white waters of ‘Los Hervideros‘.
