About Yaiza

The unspoiled town of Yaiza seems like modern influences have all gone by un-noticed. The main road that tracks through the middle of town is spotless with well maintained white washed houses either side.

There’s a calm and respectful rhythm to life in Yaiza. You’ll often see locals chatting outside the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, or sitting quietly on a bench under the bougainvillea.

The local council takes great pride in preserving Yaiza’s traditional architecture. Laws have been set in place for no neon signs or high-rise buildings.

Everything blends beautifully into the landscape, giving visitors a glimpse of how Lanzarote looked decades ago.

Things to do in Yaiza

Yaiza is a slow paced town. Take your time and enjoy some tapas and a coffee in the local ‘Bar Stop’ one of the islands oldest cafes. At the weekends there are some art and crafts markets located by the church selling products like hand made soaps, pottery and locally grown produce.

The Casa de la Cultura Benito Pérez Armas is worth a visit too. This is a charming 17th-century house that has been renovated into an art gallery and cultural center, often with local photography or painting exhibitions.

Places to see near Yaiza

Yaiza is located on the very edge of the Timanfaya National Park where continuous eruptions of over five years took place in the 1730’s. At sunset this whole are can take on an amazing orange glow from the volcanic rocks.

Just a five minute drive away you can visit the ‘Montanas del Fuego’. Once there take an amazing coach tour amongst the volcanic rocks, watch huge steam jets erupt from the still hot earth or have a meal.

A few minutes drive North from Yaiza is Lanzarote’s wine region of La Geria. The unique growing conditions help create the famous wines from this area. Each grape vine is grown in its own hole with a small wall, thousands of these placed across the landscape make an impressive site to see.
